Simon Cowell once blasted the idea of kids taking part in talent shows

Posted on: April 15, 2010

Music mogul Simon Cowell is said to have once blasted the idea of children taking part in talent shows.

Cowell, 50, had made the statement in an interview for a US radio show in 2004, where he was asked about the morals of putting children on a television talent show.

“I have a problem with that, I really do,” the Mirror quoted him as having said in the interview.

“I even have a problem with people entering at 16…They’re just too young…Look at Michael Jackson…when you deprive someone of that age of their normal growing up, you really can do them serious damage,” he had added.

Six years on, Cowell’s hit TV series BGT includes dozens of child hopefuls, and last year, singer Hollie Steel, 10, cried during a semi-final song.

The show now has checks to ensure a child is confident to be on stage.
